St. Anthony the New, the Righteous Wonderworker of Veroia

St. Anthony the New, the Righteous Wonderworker of Veroia - Commemorated on January 17th (icon taken from: http://www.imverias.gr/dev/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=59:cm&catid=14:-c&Itemid=30)

The Righteous Anthony descended from pious and rich parents and lived at the end of 10th to the beginning of the 11th century AD. When he was still young, he became a monk in a skete of Veroia...He kept up his spiritual struggles there for twenty years. Being spiritually mature, and with the blessing of the abbot of the Skete, he fled to a cave, where he lived another 54 years in ascetical struggles. The Church honors the struggles and the righteous state of the Righteous Anthony, and perceived him as Great, thus naming him “the New” in homage to the older teacher of the desert St. Anthony the Great [who is commemorated the same day].

The Righteous Anthony fell asleep in peace at the age of 94. His holy relic remained unburied and incorrupt for many days, during which it was still flexible. He is the patron Saint of Veroia [northern Greece].

Through the prayers of our Holy Fathers, Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us and save us! Amen!
