Akathist to St. John the Russian, the New Confessor and Wonderworker, whose incorrupt Holy Relic is treasured in Neo Prokopion, Evia
Written by Nun Isidora Agierotheitissa

Kontakion in the Plagal of the Fourth Tone
The perfect pinnacle of confession, and the divine example of humility, you willingly were steadfast amidst the bitterness, and your flesh shone forth with incorruption, let us honor John whose name is great, singing to him: Rejoice, O boast of the Russians.

You lived the life of the bodiless on earth in your physical flesh, O John, (3) and imitating the ranks of the Bodiless Angels, God Who fashioned you glorified you in wondrous and divine works. Therefore, you hear from those who are amazed by you such words as these:
Rejoice, the precious icon of piety,
Rejoice, rich support of the holy faith.
Rejoice, perfect one in godly struggles,
Rejoice, privileged one serving uplifted things.
Rejoice, the fair pinnacle of all the Righteous ones,
Rejoice, the sacred radiance of the confessors.
Rejoice, the most-precious joy of the Church,
Rejoice, the most-prided offspring of noble Russia.
Rejoice, lamp of the radiance of the saints,
Rejoice, treasury of incorrupt and sacred gifts.
Rejoice, O boast of the Russians.

Barbarians faced your nation in battle, and took you hostage, O all-blessed one, thus bringing you to Asia Minor, where you were sold to a terrible boss, while you totally submitted to him in slavery in your incomparable steadfastness, O Father. And being obedient to him as a humble slave, O John, to God, the guide of all things, you offered the hymn, chanting endlessly: Alleluia.

You willed to imitate Christ, and to suffer the divine Passion, therefore, you endured every insult, O John, in your gladsome and undoubting heart. And you drank their every ridicule and bitterness as a pleasant drink. Therefore, you ever gladden those you cry out to you words like these:
Rejoice, true steward of the God of all,
Rejoice, deferential servant of a vicious boss.
Rejoice, you who endured unspeakable evils,
Rejoice, you who were enriched with heavenly rewards.
Rejoice, you who endured the bitter yoke of slavery,
Rejoice, you who bore the Lord's yoke with joy.
Rejoice, divine mirror of mystical rays,
Rejoice, sacred treasury of God-given gifts.
Rejoice, anointer of the unspeakable mystagogy,
Rejoice, shining pearl of the Church.
Rejoice, lamp that shines upon the hearts of the faithful,
Rejoice, sun that speaks of the unwaning Christ.
Rejoice, O boast of the Russians.

In the rich home in which you served, a dinner was served, and through the grace of your Lord, you worked a great miracle through your piercing prayer, O Father. And from afar, O John, you sent food to your slave master in his own dish, thus granting him joy. While to God, Who dwells in the highest, you granted joy, as your burning heart chanted the hymn: Alleluia.

Having the most-pure fear of the Lord in your holy heart, O Father, as David the Prophet, you were enriched with perfect love. And through the spring of love, you approached God perfectly, and you meditated upon the law mindfully, O all-precious John, and called upon His name ceaselessly from the mouth of your heart. Therefore with incomparable care, you hearken upon us who call upon you ceaselessly:
Rejoice, the most-faithful worshipper of the God of all,
Rejoice, the bloodless Martyr of the Master of all.
Rejoice, you who were enriched with the great forbearance of Job,
Rejoice, you who unflinchingly gave a good witness.
Rejoice, you who traveled the straight path of turmoils,
Rejoice, you who bent the neck of your soul to Christ.
Rejoice, treasury of graces, full of divine fragrance,
Rejoice, river of wonders, and inheritance of fragrance.
Rejoice, the wealth of the Greeks, the incorruptible treasure,
Rejoice, perfect sharer of the mystical Table.
Rejoice, O boast of the Russians.

With the immense warmth of your fervor, O John, you followed Christ willingly, and you did not at all deny His holy and all-powerful name, O blessed one. You suffered many pains, but you were as a diamond amidst turmoils, that beautifies the Church of Christ. With the fiery rays of the confession which you gave before the godless rulers with a piercing voice, O Father, you ceaselessly spoke of God, and chanted the thrice-holy hymn, chanting in thanksgiving: Alleluia.

From Russia, O Father, you were transported to the holy land of Asia Minor as a slave. And by your righteous pains you cultivated the land, and harvested the fruit of the faith, offering it to God Who cultivated you. Through freedom in soul, you served Him, O Righteous John, and kept your mind free, giving glory to Him instead as is right. Therefore, for those who bless you, grant a godly mind and a pure heart, as we cry out to you with loud voices like this:
Rejoice, you who worked the mystical vineyard,
Rejoice, you who fed upon the grapes of your athletic pains.
Rejoice, for with precious tears you watered your pillow,
Rejoice, for with divine rejoicing you bestow harmony.
Rejoice, you who received a great talent from the hand of God,
Rejoice, you who greatly increased the portion given to you.
Rejoice, you who received the holy seed within the field of your heart,
Rejoice, you who bore fruit through the good word of your confession.
Rejoice, the good servant of every virtue,
Rejoice, the prudent disciple of the Master of all.
Rejoice, the boast of the Church and root of beautiful fruit,
Rejoice, the glory of the Righteous, and wonder of the Angels.
Rejoice, O boast of the Russians.

Willingly doing the will of the Lord, you eagerly served, O sacred John, and with your humble mindset you followed the commandments. Therefore, you rejoiced as you accepted the yoke of slavery for the love which He offered to us, as He took on the form of a servant in His great goodness. With utter desire in heart, and a joyous voice, you offered to Him the hymn and ode as is proper: Alleluia.

In your endurance, you dwelt within a dark stable with the horses, while in your heart you mystically beheld the light of Christ, and you hymned the Giver-of-light in truth, keeping the lamp of your soul lit through the illuminating rays of your all-holy prayers. I entreat you to drive away the darkness from my irrational soul, that I may rationally offer you this light-bearing ode, saying fervently these words in thanksgiving:
Rejoice, healer adorned with the beauty of confession,
Rejoice, steadfast and divine pinnacle of good struggles.
Rejoice, the most-joyous treasury of the spotless faith,
Rejoice, spotless treasury of joyous graces.
Rejoice, you who freely give from the treasury of the Saints,
Rejoice, you who strengthen the souls with precious wealth.
Rejoice, spring which brings the fragrant message of dispassion,
Rejoice, well that waters with the refreshment of the spirit.
Rejoice, for you wore the tattered garment of the flesh in humility, O Father,
Rejoice, for you gladden the soul with songs from above.
Rejoice, the perfect companion of servants,
Rejoice, the faithful servant of the divine will.
Rejoice, O boast of the Russians.

Though you lived under the dominion of deceived ones, you who trample upon the enemy, you preserved your heart, O wondrous John, and you founded a great tower of the strength of God in the house of your soul that was unassailable to all, in which you loudly spoke of God's greatness. Loudly speak to my mouth, through the boldness of your prayers, that I might totally resist the strength of the deceiver, and offer to the all-powerful God, along with the Angels, the hymn: Alleluia.

Shining with the beauty of your soul more than corruptible gold, you beautify the Church of Christ, O John, and with the golden rays of your holy deeds, you shine upon all of us with the beauty of the Master. Illumine the garment of my soul, which is soiled by the passions, through your bold intercessions, I entreat you, that I might hymn your fervent help, as is needful, and with all joy, ceaselessly saying to you words such as these:
Rejoice, container of healings, and river of wonders,
Rejoice, the most-speedy physician of incurable diseases.
Rejoice, you who exalted God through your wondrous works,
Rejoice, you who trampled upon the enemy through your unspeakable groans.
Rejoice, you who imitated well the endurance of Job,
Rejoice, for as another Lazarus, you persevered in poverty.
Rejoice, you who inherited well the wealth of Eden,
Rejoice, you who wisely found the great treasure.
Rejoice, for your flesh did not taste of corruption in death,
Rejoice, you who partake of the grace of incorruption upon the earth.
Rejoice, you who offer to God prayers of intercession,
Rejoice, protector of all the faithful, full of sympathy.
Rejoice, O boast of the Russians.

The precious members of your flesh, O Champion, bore the sacred marks of your confession, as you withstood many evils with your unswayable mind, and suffered hunger, and the bitterness of insults, which you drank as a river, and joyous food, from the eternal city of Eden, O John, in which dwell the choirs of the Righteous, and the sacred ranks of the Martyrs, and the cities of the divine confessors, as you chant ceaselessly unto God in Trinity the gladsome hymn in joy: Alleluia.

Dwelling in the divine house of the radiant and glorious trophy-bearer George in Asia Minor, you supplicated all day, and prayed all night, thus pleasing the Master of all, O John. Therefore, may you ever look graciously upon us who hymn you, granting remission of sins to our souls, and deep peace and transformation of the passions, that out of gratefulness we might cry to you in truth:
Rejoice, fund of prayer, and rule of continence,
Rejoice, river of love, and icon of gladsomeness.
Rejoice, for you imitated the heavenly ranks of the Cherubim,
Rejoice, for you illuminated the sacred ranks of the Righteous.
Rejoice, house of purity, and robe of cleanliness,
Rejoice, the highest imitator of the divine life.
Rejoice, you who took refuge in the divine church of Saint George,
Rejoice, for you pray with him to God, O Father.
Rejoice, you who accepted the passion of the Martyrs in the flesh,
Rejoice, you who joined with all those who confess God.
Rejoice, Christ's teacher of humility for us,
Rejoice, for you properly reached the height of dispassion.
Rejoice, O boast of the Russians.

You lived your life on earth as a stranger, but grew closer to Christ, Who estranged Himself for us on earth, that we might become friends and close to God, delivering us from our former disobedience, and making us sharers in the eternal joy, and that we be found in light. May your light-bearing prayers, O servant of the light, grant us every grace, O sacred John, that we be delivered from the darkness, and chant unto the Worker-of-light and Master of all, the great ode and never-silent hymn: Alleluia.

With your whole mind, O Father, you unwaveringly followed the Lord of all, Whom you desired from childhood, and Whose army you were numbered in out of obedience, inscribing His laws upon the tablets of your heart, and keeping them with exactness as a good servant, and from Whom you received divine grace as the reward for your efforts, and your face shone as did the Law-giver Moses. Therefore, do not cease to intercede for us, O good John, and make us worthy to keep the holy commandments, that we might be found in the radiant bridal chamber, and ever chant to you these good words:
Rejoice, perfect mystagogue of divine visions,
Rejoice, precious diner from the radiant Table.
Rejoice, friend of the Master and beloved son,
Rejoice, protector of the faithful, and sacred guide of brides.
Rejoice, you who glorified the immortal God below,
Rejoice, you who trampled upon the powerless enemy.
Rejoice, you who wondrously were true to your Christian name,
Rejoice, stream of wonders, and river of healings.
Rejoice, the joyfulness of the Russians and the sweetness of the Greeks,
Rejoice, the lamp of Evia and the adornment of the Church.
Rejoice, the holy shield of confessors,
Rejoice, the purity and gladness of the Athletes of the Lord.
Rejoice, O boast of the Russians.

Every painful notion you endured with joy, as you were shown to be a tower of strength against every enemy, O John, utterly revealing their machinations, and receiving the crown from the hand of Him Who works all things. Through your prayers, O Father, make us worthy to be victorious over [the enemy's] machinations, and to raise up the trophies of godly victory in strength, and strength of life, that we might all cry out the victorious ode: Alleluia.

The Russian people take refuge in your holy memory, and skip and magnify God, O John, for He gave you to them as an all-holy root. Asia Minor also dances in glory, for you blessed her through your pains and holy struggles. And Evia also sings, and the noble island rejoices, being joyously enriched with your wondrous body, which transforms corruption, and turns beyond, calling the Greeks, and every city and people that bears the name of Christ to cry out to you these words graciously:
Rejoice, you who drank insults as sweet water,
Rejoice, you who took reproach as joyous food.
Rejoice, you who bore the marks of the Lord in your flesh,
Rejoice, you who bear the seal of incorruption in it.
Rejoice, for you offered yourself to the King of all,
Rejoice, for you ever stand before His throne in heaven.
Rejoice, you who in slavery were proven as gold,
Rejoice, you who are full of gold, and shine upon the earth.
Rejoice, you who quenched the fire of the furnace through your pains,
Rejoice, you who saved your flesh from corruption in the flames.
Rejoice, you who saved the disciple from terrible danger,
Rejoice, you who fill every heart with wonder.
Rejoice, O boast of the Russians.

We venerate your incorrupt body in piety, O John, and we bless the immortal God, Who delivered every race of man from death, and through His Third-day Resurrection, resurrected us. We sing to Him in joyous voices faithfully, praising the strength of His wonders, the multitude of His miracles, and we cry from our hearts, with the Angelic choirs, the joyous hymn and cherubic ode: Alleluia.

Foreseeing your blessed repose, O John, you sought to partake of the Spotless Mysteries, that you might be born into the life of eternal communion. These were brought to you by a priest in an apple, hidden as a treasure from the faithless enemies. Having received the Mysteries within your soul, O Father, you gave your soul to God. We ever glorify Him, as the Author of our life, and we all say these to you from our heart, ceaselessly:
Rejoice, the most-precious temple of divine gifts,
Rejoice, the most-radiant container of precious virtues.
Rejoice, you who bear the good news of your calling from above,
Rejoice, you who enrich with the fragrance of the Holy Spirit.
Rejoice, you who founded within the zeal and steadfastness of the Martyrs,
Rejoice, for having them in mind, you imitated their life.
Rejoice, you who who copied the lives of all the Righteous Ones.
Rejoice, you who reached the hymnody of the Angelic ranks.
Rejoice, you who remained for many years in the dark stable,
Rejoice, you who ever dwell in the pastures of light.
Rejoice, you who adorn the Church of Christ,
Rejoice, you who beautify the holy island of Evia.
Rejoice, O boast of the Russians.

Having burned up every evil material within yourself, you were offered to the Church as an all-fragrant harbor, gladdening the faithful with the grandeur of virtues. Therefore, at your holy memory, O John, we weave godly crowns with flowers, out of debt, and rightly engrave a hymn, honoring you from our soul, for the Lord also, in great joy, placed a crown upon your head, O Father, and we chant together: Alleluia.

Beholding light from your grave as a pillar of fire, you told to those there clearly, O John, of your life full of light which you struggled in on earth, and the boldness which you were eternally enriched with by the Father of Lights. As you never leave His hand, we entreat you to extend your hand, that we be delivered from the darkness, and walk in the light of the commandments, as your servants ceaselessly hymn the Giver-of-light and Savior, the Redeemer Jesus, and ceaselessly say to you with one voice:
Rejoice, lamp of the Light that drives away the darkness of passions,
Rejoice, for you lit within your soul a lamp with the light of the virtues.
Rejoice, you who gladden the hearts of the faithful with your light,
Rejoice, you who make joyous the holy Church with your beauty.
Rejoice, man of godly and holy desires,
Rejoice, divine lover of sacred commandments.
Rejoice, you who adorn the firmament above,
Rejoice, you who strengthen the souls of all through the wood of the Cross.
Rejoice, spring of divine things, and life-giving waters,
Rejoice, infinite stream of unspeakable wonders.
Rejoice, tree that bears the fruit of Paradise,
Rejoice, flower that carries the fragrance of the Comforter.
Rejoice, O boast of the Russians.

Rejoicing that your time of bitter slavery had come to an end, your holy soul passed to the hand of God, and inherited joy in truth, O John, as you ever rejoice together with the choirs of the Angels. Let us all hail you, speaking to the Athlete of the Lord, celebrating his radiant memory with fervor, and embracing his sacred body with faith. And the choir claps on earth in harmony, while those in the heavens cry out the ode, to God in the highest, ever chanting to Him: Alleluia.

Truly surpassing the sands of the sea, O Father, are the multitude of your wonders, which you pour upon the faithful, who out of debt approach your sacred church, and entreat your intercessions, O sacred John, that we be delivered from sicknesses and from the assaults of the passions, as we cry out willingly with a glad heart:
Rejoice, healer of sicknesses, and driver-out of demons,
Rejoice, fountain of wonders, and mixing-bowel of blessing.
Rejoice, you who shine as a star with the Three-rays of light,
Rejoice, you who dissipate the soul-corrupting mist of the passions.
Rejoice, you grant to all the true wealth of the Master,
Rejoice, you who pour forth incorruptible treasure for the faithful.
Rejoice, divine harbor which grants salvation to souls,
Rejoice, you who befriend us with the Prince of peace.
Rejoice, you who truly bring forth strange wonders,
Rejoice, for your flesh was wondrously estranged from corruption.
Rejoice, pillar of Russia and treasure of Greece,
Rejoice, unsleeping protector of the whole world.
Rejoice, O boast of the Russians.

O All-holy Father, the height of divine confessors, and newly-illumined star, O John, (3) you who received the experience of the Martyrs in your precious body, and the sweat of the Righteous, and willingly endured toils, and received a crown upon your head from your beloved Master, and were honored by incorruption of your holy flesh: grant us the honor of incorruption in the heavens, through your prayers and uplifted hands, that we find the glory of eternal life, with all those who have been saved. To the Lord, Whom you stand before, we offer the ode, crying out with the Bodiless ones ceaselessly: Alleluia.

Apolytikion in the Fourth Tone
O Lord Jesus, unto Thee Thy lamb doth cry with a great voice: O my Bridegroom, Thee I love; and seeking Thee, I now contest, and with Thy baptism am crucified and buried. I suffer for Thy sake, that I may reign with Thee; for Thy sake I die, that I may live in Thee: accept me offered out of longing to Thee as a spotless sacrifice. Lord, save our souls through her intercessions, since Thou art great in mercy.

Don't Complain

"Do not think that you have a right to complain when your prayers are not answered. God fulfills your desires in a manner that you do not know."
-St. Nektarios the Wonderworker

Through the prayers of our Holy Fathers, Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us and save us! Amen!

Excerpt from Homily III on the Ascension of Christ by St. John Chrysostom

Excerpt from Homily III on the Ascension of Christ by St. John Chrysostom (amateur translation)

The theater of the Church is joyous to me, not amusing men working futility, but causing great weeping to the devil. He sees above those who were dead below, as roots of the Resurrection. He sees Him Whom he delivered to the cross below, beheld in the heavens. He sees angels on earth in fulfillment. He sees Him paradoxically passing through the air. He sees the heavenly powers all gathered together to say: “Open the gates, our princes, and the King of glory shall enter”, and others saying in reply: “The Lord strong and mighty in war.” Which war? That against the common foe of all men, which neither men, nor prophets, neither the righteous were able to conquer....

For all, today's feast becomes even more serious, as we behold all the ranks of angels everywhere dancing, some following Him, other going before, others gathering around, others further with the choir of the apostles, telling them: “O Gallileans, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus Whom you see ascended from you into heaven, He will come again in the same manner as you saw Him ascend to heaven.” This is Jesus Who showed a multitude of wonders. At this feast of the Master, the day of the Ascension, the devil is wailing, as we said, while the faithful are joyful. Now has the joyous spring dawned, and the beauty of flowers blossomed. The branches of vines are pruned, the olive trees give their sweet fragrance, the fig trees give their immature fruit, and the wind blows rustling the leaves, mimicking the dancing of the waves: all things rejoice with us at the ascension of the Master. Bring, therefore, with us the words of David, that we might rightly cry out to the Master Who has ascended: “Let all the nations clap their hands, crying to God with a voice of rejoicing. The Lord ascends with the sound of the trumpet, to where He was.” He ascends, but is not separated. For he who descended, has ascended above the heavens. The prophets saw no other, nor did the apostles eat with another. No other was in the bosom of the Father, nor was another judged by Pilate. No other was nailed to the cross with nails, nor was another carried by the Cherubim. No other was wrapped in a shroud by Joseph, nor does another hold creation in the palm of His hand. No other was laid in a tomb, nor was another hymned by the Seraphim. No other is seated with the Father, Who took root in the virginal womb. God ascended with a shout, the Lord with the cry of the trumpet, He Who is the Creator from the ages, Who brought all things into being, Who fashioned Adam, Who generated human nature, Who translated to life Enoch who pleased Him, Who preserved Noah together with the world, Who called Abraham from the land of the Chaldeans, Who made Isaac to be a sign of the mystery of the cross, Who granted Jacob the twelve-pillars of offspring, Who granted Job patience, Who made Moses to become the leader of the people, Who filled Samuel with prophecy from his mother's womb, Who anointed David as king from the prophets, Who granted Solomon wisdom, Who took up Elias in a flaming chariot, Who instilled the prophets with foreknowledge, Who granted the apostles gifts of healing, and Who cried to them: “Take heart, I have overcome the world.”

This is the Lord of glory Who is ascended into the heavens with a shout, and is seated on the right hand of the Father. Under His authority are angels, and dominions and powers, and it is He Who receives our pained prayers, and makes us victors over the pirates of this world. Under His dominion is every rank of the unclean spirits, as He says to us: “Behold, I have given you authority to trample upon snakes and scorpions.”

Unharmed and spotless, healthy and whole, preserve us in soul and body and spirit, filling us with the fruits of righteousness and fruitfulness, You Who are the God of all, You Who didst make us worthy to gather to celebrate this feast, for to You belong all glory, honor and worship, to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Saint Akylina (Angelina) the New Martyr of Thessaloniki

Christ is risen! Truly He is risen!

St. Akylina the New Martyr of Thessaloniki (Feast Day - September 27) (https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUNExKWDn2UXNDoLq5jHBIazpQCYj72C4o47ntl5wWVObfSbtLSJRg3AhM63edcEglruE4KWcMdVeHAQpKodsu0G00EH5MmUvSlFfrqxJSjU0DUi9cR0OEj1vk2PES17mMh4VUE_xrolPo/s1600/akylina+main.jpg)

Akylina (or Angelina***, see below), the holy New Martyr of Christ was from Thessalonica, from the village of Zagliveri situated in the Ardameri Diocese. She was the offspring of a pious mother. Her martyrdom took place from the following set of circumstances.

One day the Saint’s father quarreled and wrestled with a Turkish neighbour (since both Christians and Turks lived side by side in this place). By the Evil One’s collaboration he struck and slew the Hagarene. Whereupon he was arrested by the local authorities, who led him to the pasha of Thessalonica to have him condemned. Now he was terrified of death and sought acquittal, so he offered to become a Muslim. (Alas, his fall!) Therefore, they did not execute him. At that time Akylina was an infant nursing on her mother’s milk. After the passage of some time, the Turks enjoined her father that he must have his daughter become a Muslim. He told them:

"Do not be concerned about my daughter. She is under my authority and I will convert her when I want."

However, Akylina’s mother remained anchored in the Faith of Christ and never ceased every hour to exhort her child to stand firmly in the Faith of Christ and not to ever deny Jesus Christ.

When the maiden reached 18 years of age, the Turks once again spoke with her father concerning the conversion. At this point he summoned Akylina and said:

“My child, other Turks have approached me daily on the matter of your accepting Mohammedanism. Therefore, either now or a little later, you will become a Muslim, only make the decision in a day or two, so the Muslims will not harass me.”

Yet the Saint, who was ignited and enflamed with the love of Christ, with great courage declared:

“Perhaps you think that I have the same little faith as yourself to deny my Maker and Creator, the Lord Jesus Christ Who submitted to the cross and death for our sake? I refuse. I am prepared to undergo the woeful torment, even death, for the love of Christ.”

By these superb and admirable statements she was not the daughter of the thrice-miserable father, but truly the daughter of Christ the Heavenly King!

Observing the Saint’s unswerving belief, the father went before the Turks and divulged to them:

“I am unable to induce my daughter to change her beliefs; you do with her whatever you will."

Upon hearing this they went into a flurry, and immediately dispatched men of the court to apprehend the Martyr. Seeing them approaching, the Saint’s blessed mother took hold of Akylina, and gave her this final instruction:

“Lo, my most beloved child and my sweetest daughter, Akylina. Behold, fruit of my womb, the hour has arrived of which I have warned you. Therefore, my girl, attend and obey my admonition. Display courage in the torments which you will face and do not renounce Christ.”

Likewise, Akylina replied:

“Have no fear, my mother, for I have this intention. The All-kind God will be my help. Pray for me.”

Thus, they bid each other farewell with tears.

The servant of the judge bound the Saint and led her to the tribunal. The compassionate mother followed after her beloved daughter to the place of condemnation, since motherly feelings could not conceive of being separated from her dear child. However those that had taken her intocustody, locked her outside the courtyard. Akylina was taken inside into the presence of the judge, who in a coarse manner blurted out to her:

“Eh! You, become a Muslim.”

The Saint exclaimed:

“No, I will not become one. Never will I forsake my belief and my Master Christ!”

Hearing this, the judge became incensed. Therefore he commanded that the Saint be undressed and be left wearing only her chemise. Then they tied Akylina to a column and two servants beat her with rods for many hours. Notwithstanding, the Martyr underwent this torture bravely.

Afterwards the judge and other Turks had the Martyr brought forward again before them. They began to flatter Akylina and promise her expensive gifts if she would renounce the faith. But the bride of Christ possessed in her heart love towards her sublime Bridegroom Christ and would not even consider their offers. Furthermore, since he was extremely wealthy, he brazenly proposed to her:

“Akylina, become a Muslim and I will make you my son’s bride.”

Christ’s Martyr replied with an immense daring:

“You and your son go to perdition.”

With these words the judge’s wrath was kindled. They tied her again as before and flogged her for many hours. When they unfettered her for a third examination, the judge asked her:

“Hapless one, are you not embarrassed to be beaten naked in front of so many men?”

He said this because from the countless blows her slip was in shreds and she was exposed. The judge continued:

“Either you become a Muslim or have your bones shattered before all.”

In refutation she declared:

“And what attraction does your faith have for me to deny my Christ, or what miracle of your religion shall I believe, since you have filthy and indecent lives?”

O fearless testimony! A noble reply worthy of heavenly praise, not from a gentle and delicate young girl, but from a valiant giant!

All within earshot were disgraced, essentially by the brilliancy of her truthful speech. They were at a loss at how to deal with her. In their rage they scourged the Saint mercilessly a third time, leaving her as dead. The earth was reddened by her blood and her flesh fell in pieces to the ground. Next they untied the Martyr and had her carried by a Christian who was present to her mother’s home. Whereupon the mother embraced her daughter who was breathing her last, and asked:

“My child, what have you done?”

As she came to herself slightly, the Martyr exerted much effort to answer, and opening her eyes, beheld her mother:

“O my mother, what else could I do except that which you instructed me? Behold, according to your command I have preserved my confession of faith inviolate.”

Akylina’s mother raised her arms and eyes towards heaven and glorified God. After conversing with her mother, the Martyr surrended her soul into the hands of God on September 27, 1764 and received the martyr’s crown.

St. Akylina’s most venerable and sacred relics straightaway emitted a marvelous fragrance so divine that all the streets which they traversed with her martyric relics for burial were filled with scent. At night a heavenly light descended upon and illuminated Akylina’s tomb like a shining star. All the Christians who observed this phenomena praised God, to Whom is due glory and power unto endless ages. Amen.

But as it says above: "At night a heavenly light descended upon and illuminated Akylina’s tomb like a shining star." When the Christians saw this they took her body and buried it in a secret place. According to tradition, the three men who had the courage to do this were named Tsoplas, Kalimeris and Bouklas, and they promised each other that they would never reveal the location of the remains of St. Akylina so that they never fall into the hands of the Turks again...(See below for the finding of the Saint's Holy Relics)

Since 1957 the memory of St. Akylina is celebrated on September 27th, the day of her martyrdom. Before that her feast was on April 24th. The reason for the transfer of the date of the feast has to do with the decision of the locals of the village of Zagliverion who wanted to combine their two primary feasts, that of St. Akylina and St. George (Apr. 23) - to whom their central church was dedicated -, at the same time. The transfer was made in 1957, but firmly established after 1984 when a large church in St. Akylina's honor was built in the village.

A Service in honor of St. Akylina was discovered in the Church of St. George in 1969. This book was authored by the monk Polycarpos A. Giakoudis of Pantokratoras and contains the Vespers, Matins, Liturgy and Life in honor of the Saint. In September of 1969 the hymnographer Elder Gerasimos Mikragiannanitis wrote a Service in St. Akylina's honor and since then it has been chanted. In 1980 a Salutation and Lamentation Service were added.

The first icon depiction of the Saint dates back to 1858 by Hierodeacon Hierotheos of the Holy Monastery of Loggavardas (Longovarda). The icon depicts all the New Martyrs under the Turkish yoke, and St. Akylina is one of them. Also in the Church of St. George are the three oldest icons of St. Akylina. The first dates to 1903 and depicts the Saint whole-bodied with scenes of her life on her left and right, and Christ blesses her from above. The second is also whole-bodied and has the following dedication: "Polycarpou Athanasiou Giakoudi Zagliverinon Pantocratorino of Mount Athos on 1 September 1904", that is, it was dedicated from the monk who first composed a Service in her honor. The third icon is by Panagioti Anagnostou from 1913 and St. Akylina is depicted with St. Kyranna. All three icons are Athonite in origin.

The home of St. Akylina as well as the site of her martyrdom still exist till this day and can be visited, though they are run down. The feast of St. Akylina is known by the locals as Akylineia.

The uncovering of the Holy Relics of St. Akylina the New Martyr (amateur translation/summary)
Amidst a climate of contrition, and with the participation of many priests, monks and a multitude of the faithful of our Metropolis, Tuesday May 22, in the Holy Church of the All-powerful Taxiarchs, Ossa, a vigil was celebrated for the Apodosis of Pascha, headed by Metropolitan John of Lagada, Letes and Retines, who was joined by Bishop Demetrios of Thermon, during which his Eminence officially announced the finding of the Holy Relics of St. Akylina-Angelines...

His Eminence, who was visibly excited, in his homily first offered the life of the Saint, and related the chronology of the events surrounding the finding of the Holy Relics of the Holy Neomartyr Angeline or Akylina, describing all of the wondrous events that followed and brought confirmation of the relics.

He continued to mentioned messages from the martyrdom of the Saint, who with her living presence calls us to remain steadfast in the Orthodox faith, and to give our confession of faith through our participation in the life of our Holy Church.

The all-wise Providence of God, as his Eminence said, chose this instant to reveal His living grace through His Holy Neomartyr Akylina-Angeline and to strengthen our faith.

Closing his homily, he reminded everyone of the prayer of his Eminence Metropolitan Nikodemos of Ieressos, Holy Mountain and Ardameriou, the last time that he had liturgized in the Holy Church of the All-powerful Taxiarchs, as he expressed his wish and his entreaty to the Saint that her relics be found, as those of St. Kyranna were, recently.

Then spoke the Chancellor of the Holy Metropolis of Ieressos, Holy Mountain and Ardameriou Fr. Chrysostom Maidones, who mentioned the dream and desire of all of the generations of the inhabitants of Zagliveri that the relics of the Saint be found.

The people of Zagliveri, since 1764, have been praying that the relics of the Saint be found. It was, as he noted, the prayer of our bishop, who built a church in the Saint's honor in Zagliveri. Now, as he related, during the hour of trial of the health of the Metropolitan, that the Saint appeared and gave him this joy.

He continued that what occurred here also occurred in Mytilene with the appearance of St. Raphael. Of course, with him we did not have anything, neither biographical, neither historical facts, but at the core were the revelations. A similar thing occurred with the relics of St. Akylina, of whom we did know of her life, however.

Finally, the Chancellor of the Holy Metropolis of Ieressos noted that until today, many studies had been done to try to find the relics of the Saint. He said that there were eight occasions when definite information was learned that was thought to have pointed to the place of her burial, without any success, however. In contrast, in outside the Holy Bema of the Church of the All-powerful Taxiarchs in Ossa, the Saint herself was revealed and showed the location of her relics.

***It should also be noted that the name of the Saint was most likely Angelina, which St. Nikodemos of the Holy Mountain wrote as "Akylina" out of simplicity, and due to the fact that it was more of a Greek name....

Apolytikion in the Plagal of the First Tone (amateur translations below)
Let us praise the divine Akylina, whom I behold as a godly-minded girl and Champion of Christ, who watered the faith with her love for Him, and deposed the enemy through her holy struggles, and was granted divine glory. And she entreats Christ the Word that He be merciful to our souls.

Additional Apolytikion in the Plagal of the First Tone
Zagliveri rejoices in your struggle, she the village that sprouted you as a fragrant flower, O most-comely virgin of Christ Akylina, for you struggled steadfastly, and received from God the crown of incorruption. Entreat ceaselessly that He be merciful to our souls.

St. Luke of Simferopol Regarding Priests

Christ is risen! Truly He is risen!
St. Luke Archbishop of Simferopol the Surgeon (+1961) - Commemorated May 29 / June 11 (source)

Note: I by no means stand in judgment of any Orthodox clergy throughout the world. And St. Luke by no means is denigrating the great grace given to every Priest to celebrate the Holy Mysteries, regardless of their sins. I simply translate and post these admonishing yet consoling and inspiring words of this great Saint of our days, that we be all urged to greater love and sacrifice for the Lord, the Good Shepherd and True High Priest of the faithful.

St. Luke of Simferopol Regarding Priests (amateur translation)
Regarding the priests who shorten services or who do not celebrate them regularly, St. Luke the Surgeon brought to mind the passage of the Prophet Jeremiah: “Cursed be everyone who does the work of God negligently.” (Jeremiah 48:10) He himself celebrated all the services and liturgized with great piety and care, without rushing, cutting or shortening. He advised priests continuously in encyclicals to celebrate services daily and to pray for their flock: “We have churches which remain locked all week, besides Sunday. Should not the Church be open every morning, and the bell ring, calling the faithful, even for a short time, to enter the Church before going to their work? If the faithful knew that the Church is open every morning, or that the priest is reading the Orthros, the Hours, etc., the grace of God will speak to the weak Christian, and would attract him to Church, where he would find the priest praying for him...

"I entreat priests to keep this request of mine. It is not difficult, even when the priest is all by himself, without a chanter, to read the services. The blessing of God to this cleric will be great, for he who remembers that God made him to pray for the people...If the faith and the soul of the priest is lukewarm, how can he light the light of the faith in the souls which have lost it, not recognizing God in the souls of the men whom God gave him to shepherd and to pray for...

"A priest who does not have the rudimentary knowledge of his mission might solve a problem by occupying a priestly vacancy, however, he will create much greater and more serious problems...You Priests have this goal in your lives, to nourish the people of God. But maybe you see your priesthood as a means that you can eat? Perhaps you see your service like a simple job, like a mere breadwinning profession? You should know that priests like these are easily recognized by the their flocks...

Sts. Luke of Simferopol and Nektarios of Pentapolis the Wonderworkers, two persecuted hierarchs of the 20th century, but who served as model pastors and shepherds of their flocks (source)

"Many were the hits taken by the Church all of those years, many the wounds, great the catastrophes. Naturally, all of these were allowed by God to enlighten us, because we ourselves are also responsible. It is necessary that we repent...

"All of these things that we experienced have not become lessons for us, have not taught us anything. And we continue to make the same mistakes, and even worse than before. Because of this, men become frustrated, distance themselves from the Church, and fall into the nets of heresies, with the end result being the loss of their souls.”

He urged priests to ever preach the word of God, even if they were lacking in theological education: “If the priest seeks the grace of God, if the nous and the heart of the priest are filled with the words of God, then his mouth will speak from the heart. The Holy Spirit, which dwells in the heart of the priest, will Himself preach with the humble mouth of the priest...

"In the Holy Scriptures are so many themes to preach on, that it is easy for anyone to find them if he reads...Let us remember, O brothers, also Saint Seraphim of Sarov, who read the whole New Testament each week.

"If you cannot preach with the word, preach with other things. You should be fragrant before men with your life, your personality, with your love towards Christ, with the spirit of Christian love, purity and deep faith. If you do not have this fragrance, nor the gift of speaking, then you will not be a shepherd, you will be a hireling. And then, what defense will you give at the terrible Judgment Seat of Christ? The heart of the priest is a special heart which should ever shine from the faith of Jesus Christ. The heart of the priest should be fire, to shine from the light of the Gospel, to shine from the love towards the Cross of Jesus Christ”

St. Melangell, the Righteous Abbess of Wales

Christ is risen! Truly He is risen!
St. Melangell the Abbess of Wales (+641) - Commemorated May 27 / January 31 (source)

"The Church in The British Isles will only begin to grow when she begins to venerate her own Saints"
-Saint Arsenios of Paros (†1877)

SAINT MELANGELL -  Celtic landscapes have a way of stirring the human heart with their majesty and grandeur. They bring to mind the courageous and extremely self-sufficient saints who abandoned everything for a life of solitude and prayer in isolated, even treacherous, environs. These saints, by their holy and unconventional lives, conferred peace upon the land and the creatures because they had been liberated, at least in part, from their fallen human nature. As the Apostle Paul succinctly states: "For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God... because the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and obtain the glorious liberty of the children of God." (Romans 8:19,21).

St. Melangell (pronounced Mel-en-geth) is one of these saints who achieved such liberty. Through her consecrated life, she helped free the people and creation in the vicinity of her struggle to attain their supreme status of beauty and completion in God.

Although the major life of St. Melangell was not written until the fifteenth century, it is likely that her cult flourished long before a life was written about her, so great was the esteem with which she was held by the local populace.

The actual era and lineage of St. Melangell are disputed. However, even in the misty shadows of her Irish and/or Welsh genealogy, it is certain that she was of royal or noble lineage and, thus, was expected to marry. In response to God's call to a life of prayer and solitude, St. Melangell renounced her royal status for the religious life. Overlooking her boldness, her father insisted that she marry. Desiring above all things to be devoted to God alone, she fled Ireland around 590 and settled in Pennant, one of the most lonely and lovely areas of Montgomeryshire (present-day Powys), at the head of the Tanant Valley in Northern Wales. In this spot, which came to be called "Pennant Melangell", sleeping on bare rock with a cave as her cell, she lived a hidden life of prayer for almost fifteen years.

Around 604, St. Melangell was "discovered" by the Welsh Prince of Pengwern Powys, Brochfael Ysgithrog, while he was hunting in the area around Pennant. As his hounds pursued their prey, the frightened hare ran into a bramble thicket for safety. Searching for the hare in the thicket, the Prince unexpectedly found St. Melangell. She was deep in prayer and had not heard the dogs or the horn or the sound of human footsteps. The breathless hare had hidden itself in the folds of her garment and peered out at the fierce hounds, trusting in its holy protectress. Prince Brochfael signaled the dogs to snatch the hare, but they dared not approach the saint nor would they kill the hare. Aware now of the situation, St. Melangell bravely drove the hounds back. The Prince had never experienced anything like this before. He was utterly amazed and cautiously approached the anchoress for an explanation. After hearing her story, Prince Brochfael, deeply moved by St. Melangell's beauty, purity and love for God, had no choice but to acknowledge her sanctity. Nonetheless, he suggested that she leave her solitude and be wedded to him, but she adamantly refused. Impressed by her sanctity and determination, he donated a parcel of land, which included a churchyard and valley, to be used by her to found a monastery. The Prince expressed his fervent wish that the area be dedicated to the service of God. He also requested that the land be a place of refuge for people and animals, in particular the hares she had befriended long before the encounter with Prince Brochfael.

St. Melangell is reputed to have lived some thirty-seven years after the hunting incident. The area did indeed become a sanctuary under the anchoress' guardianship. During her life, no animal was ever killed on her land. A known haven of safety not just for hares, but for all creatures, even wild animals living in the area became tame.

Humans, too, sought asylum from persecution, confident that neither prince nor chieftain would set foot upon Pennant Melangell in an attempt to violently seize them or demand unjust tribute. In time, St. Melangell became abbess of a community of virgins who had been drawn to her holy example, seeking their freedom as daughters of God.

The Church of Pennant Melangell is located near Llangynog in Powys. From its first foundation in the seventh century, it was a regular place of worship for the local farming community. For centuries no one would kill a hare in the church or vicinity of Pennant Melangell. Also, if anyone shouted at a hunted hare "God and Melangell be with thee", it was sure to escape. To this day, in honour of the saint, the hares are respected by the local hunters and are never harmed. After her death, St. Melangell became the tutelary saint of hares. Today, she is recognized as the Celtic patroness of [hares, other small] animals and of the natural environment.

Through her resolve to maintain her spiritual focus at any cost, St. Melangell reached a life of "glorious liberty" in which she truly participated as a daughter of God. Local tradition holds that St. Melangell was specially called by the Lord Himself to restore the Pennant Valley to Paradise. Hence, her very presence imbued the land, creatures and people with joy, peace and security. Her community imitated and memorialized her life, bequeathing the essence of sanctity to the area forever.

Trechant lu fyddin y fall.   (Triumphs over all the powers of evil.)

A Troparion for St Melangell in Tone 8
Preferring the rigours of monasticism to worldly status and marriage, O pious Melangell, thou wast fifteen years on a rock, emulating the example of the Syrian Stylites. Wherefore, O Saint, pray to God that He will give us strength to serve Him as He wills, that we may be found worthy of His great mercy.

Apolytikion in the First Tone (amateur translations below)
(written by Abbess Isidora Agierotheitissa)
Through your righteous ways and angelic life, you pleased God and were proved, O Melangella, for you abandoned your noble birth, and royal riches and honor, and came to the desert, becoming a mother to virgin nuns. Hail, O root of Ireland, hail, O boast of the Celts, hail, O lamp of Brittany and the pride of Wales.

Megalynarion
Hail, O wondrous daughter of kings, the flower of the desert, and the adornment of virgins, hail, O merciful Melangella the Righteous, the most-notable glory of Wales.

Doxastikon of the Stichera in the Plagal of the Second Tone
Today, in the exhalation of spring, the memory of the Venerable Melangell gives fragrance to the faithful as the lily of the field. For the fragrance of Christ, according to Paul, drives away the odor of death, and to her we cry out: Hail, you who shattered the infirmity of female nature, and with manliness of mind, you struggled as a bodiless one. Hail, the mark of royal glory, who walked the narrow way of asceticism. Hail, the root of Ireland divine in form, the protector and defender of Wales, and the protector of those who bear your name, who are in dangers. Intercede, we pray, to the Trinitarian God, that He have mercy on our souls.

Doxastikon of the Aposticha in the Plagal of the Fourth Tone
When Daniel, unharmed in the lion's den, was beheld by the king, he cried out: "Great are You, the God of Daniel, and there is none other beyond You." When the King Brochfael, who was hunting with his dogs, beheld you, O Venerable Melangell, he wondered at your manliness, and sought to wed you, promising riches and glory. You, however, cried to him: "I am not seeking a groom, for I do not wish for a mortal bridegroom. I left my people and my father's house, and came to Wales, and dwelt in this cave. Therefore, it is not I who life, but Christ lives within me." Entreat Him, O Mother pouring forth wonders, on behalf of those who honor you with fervor.

Kontakion in the Fourth Tone.
You stood as abbess in asceticism in the desert like the pine tree, shining upon glorious nuns with wonderworking, and ever entreat on behalf of those who honor you.

Oikos
As when the rabbit fled to your cave when it was being chased by the hunting dogs to be delivered from lack of mercy, thus, O Venerable Mother, we who are warred against by the devil, who prowls like a lion seeking to devour us, hasten to the protection of your intercessions, crying out: help us, O most-sympathetic Melangell, trample upon the enemy, through the God-given sword of your intercessions, and preserve us from his snares, guiding us towards the working out of our salvation with fear and trembling, and ceaselessly entreat your Bridegroom Christ, on behalf of those who honor you.

Synaxarion
On the 27th of this month (May), the Memory of the Venerable Melangell, who hailed from Ireland, and lived in asceticism in Wales.

Melangell, of the coming eternal life,
Together with the angelic choirs, was made worthy.
